Based on their ionic structure, ionic liquids show remarkable physical properties which can be exploited in many high-tech engineering and functional fluids such as

  • non-flammable hydraulic liquids,
  • high-performing lubricants,
  • liquid piston in gas compression.

Outstanding properties of ILs in pump and compressor applications

Offering the unique combination of being liquid and literally showing no vapour pressure, ILs open new opportunities for operating liquids in pump and compressor applications as they additionally can offer good lubrication properties, high temperature stability, low compressibility and low solubility for gases The efficiency of all lubricated machines, e.g. engines, can rise remarkably. An increase of up to 30% higher volumetric efficiency of high pressure pumps is achievable; the economics of pulsating pressure testing devices can be improved by up to 100%. Utilizing Ionic Liquids in liquid ring vacuum pumps can lower the vacuum pressure from about 70 mbar to below 1 mbar. Liquid pistons for gas conveying are already realised as well as higher pressure ratios, due to the lack in danger of oil conflagration.
